Volkswagen wins four trophies at What Car? Van and Commercial Vehicle of the Year

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles scooped four titles at the What Car? Van and Commercial Vehicle of the Year Awards 2022.

The brand won the award for Best Aftersales, while the Volkswagen Caddy, Crafter and Transporter 6.1 also claimed titles.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ aftersales programme was praised for its extensive warranty, flexible servicing options and its roadside assistance, helped by the brand’s network of Van Centres offering extended opening hours and mobile service clinics.

The fifth-generation Volkswagen Caddy won two titles in the small van category – Best Overall and Best Value for Ownership Cost.

The judges were impressed by the vehicle’s smooth drive, sleek design and, competitive running costs.

Steve Huntingford, Editor of What Car? Vans said: “Not only does the Volkswagen Caddy stand out for its impressive driving dynamics and great build quality, but its economical new diesel engine helps keep a lid on running costs, as do the Caddy’s exceptional residual values.”

The iconic Volkswagen Transporter 6.1 took the title for Best Value for Ownership in the medium van category.

Industry experts praised the van’s all-around versatility as well as its exceptional ride and reliability.

Despite the original Transporter rolling off the production line over 70 years ago, the panel noted the vehicle’s evolution and clear step forward from its predecessors.

Steve Huntingford added: “The Transporter has one of the most iconic names in the van world and with good reason. It’s well built and enjoyable to drive, plus its cult popularity has boosted its residual values well beyond those of the competition.”

Best to Drive in the Large Van category was awarded to the already multi award-winning Volkswagen Crafter.

The Crafter’s innovative and intelligent driver assistance systems put the van a class above the rest. The latest generation of Crafter is more practical, innovative, and economical than ever before.

Steve Huntingford commented on the Volkswagen Crafter: “With sharp electro-mechanical steering and cutting-edge driving assistance systems, the Volkswagen Crafter proves that big vans don’t have to be intimidating to drive.”

The judging panel for What Car? Van and Commercial Vehicle of the Year 2022 was formed of industry leaders and experts, who reviewed models looking at running costs, drivability, comfort and technology advances.

James Allitt, head of aftersales at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said: “We’re delighted to have won the Best Aftersales award, in addition to three of our vans claiming top spots in their respective categories.

“Every year we want to raise our game – and it’s a testament to the business that all our hard work has been rewarded.”
