A couple had a lucky escape after the handbrake failed on their van while they were in the back of it.
Signwriters Bruce and Amelia Isaac were working in the van on the promenade at Westward Ho! in north Devon when they felt the vehicle begin to move.
The pair managed to jump out and attempted to put the handbrake back on after it “slipped off” but the works van ended up perched off the 22ft (seven metre) high promenade.
Bruce said: “”The handbrake had slipped and it was very windy so as we were working we became aware that the van was moving.
“We jumped out and tried to put the handbrake on – it was scary.
“It was like the Italian Job, but the Westward Ho! Job.”
The van was later lifted clear and no-one was hurt.
The couple had been working on some signs in the back of the parked van.

Yes! Parked up on a pub car park for the night, over-looking the River Severn. The car park was a steady slope down, so applied the handbrake and jumped out to put levelers underneath. Whilst getting the levelers out, my partner screamed and promptly managed to apply the foot brake.
Needless to say, we’ve had the handbrake adjusted and now always leave it in gear!
