Volkswagen has teased pictures of its all-electric ID. Buzz concept, bringing one of its most iconic vehicles into the new era, and confirmed that a California campervan will also be made available.
The firm’s Hannover plant will produce the ID.Buzz electric van in People Mover (passenger) and Cargo (commercial vehicle) forms from next year ahead of the ID. California “in the second half of this decade”.
The interior design concept includes an extra roomy luggage compartment and revolutionary flexible seating to create even more space in a few simple steps.
The ID. Buzz is the next generation of the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and is based on the modular electric drive kit (MEB) platform, which allows for different battery options to suit different vehicle purposes and budgets.
The AR head-up display projects directions straight onto the road and, thanks to augmented reality, the arrows always point exactly where you need to go.

Replacing the classic round headlights of its early counterparts, the ID. Buzz comes with intelligent LED ‘eyes’ that communicate with drivers and pedestrians.
If you’re about to turn a corner, for example, the headlights will point in the direction you’re heading.
If the ID. Buzz notices any pedestrians or cyclists on the edge of the road, it can even look towards them and use subtle light signals to let them know you’re there.
The cockpit, meanwhile, does away with complex buttons and knobs, all of the functions can be controlled via the intuitive touchpad on the steering wheel.
As exciting as the ID. Buzz concept is, we could be waiting a while before we see something like it available on the market but VW assures us that “it’ll be worth the wait”.
