Police investigate motorhome scammers

Newton Abbot Police in Devon are reminding people that there is support available to those who fall victim to scammers following an investigation into a pair of scammers targeting motorhome and campervan owners, Dawlish Today reports.

A spokesperson for Newton Abbot Police said: “We have recently investigated an incident where two males have been travelling around our force area targeting individuals who own motorhomes as part of a scam.”

The two men offer to purchase the persons motorhome, even going so far as to physically hand over or transfer them a large sum of money upfront, gaining the victims trust.

When it comes to leaving with the vehicle, however, they will all of a sudden identify ‘issues’ with the vehicle, such as using a damp meter or crawling beneath the vehicle and removing material claiming it to be rotten.

“The males can then become intimidating and pressure the seller into returning some of the money claiming the vehicle is not worth what they initially paid.”

It is understood that the duo operate under a business name, and travel with an older male they claim to be their father.

The spokesperson said: “Being scammed can be very distressing, and the impact is often emotional as well as financial.

“If you’ve been scammed, you’re not alone, and there’s support available.”
