New towing rules could see caravan sales spike

Changes to towing rules soon to be confirmed by the Department for Transport could see spike in caravan sales.

With these changes, anyone with a full driving licence will be able to tow a trailer or caravan without an extra test.

Before the rule change, those who passed their car driving test before January 1, 1997, could drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250kg maximum authorised mass.

Once the law has changed, drivers who passed their test from January 1, 1997, will be allowed to tow trailers up to 3,500kg MAM.

The DVLA will automatically update driving licence records to show that drivers are allowed to tow.

John Lally, Director General of the National Caravan Council (NCC), said: “COVID-19 restrictions on travel have helped, as the industry offers ‘social distance by design’ products.

“The industry is successfully attracting a new, younger customer while retaining existing ones.

“It has been a challenge for firms to meet the demand, but they have risen to it and the resourcefulness, dependability and professionalism they showed is reflected in these record figures.”
