Motorhome destroyed in ‘suspicious’ fire

Police are treating a fire which destroyed a motorhome on the Isle of Wight as suspicious.

Firefighters tackled the blaze at a Shanklin holiday park in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday).

Crews were called to the scene at Lower Hyde Holiday Park at around 4am.

Firefighters from Newport, Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor were among those in attendance.

A motorhome was described as “well alight”, and two breathing apparatus, hose reels and jets were used to bring it under control.

A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue said the vehicle was destroyed in the fire, which is believed to have been set deliberately.

Firefighters returned to station at around 5am but police officers remain at the scene.

A spokesperson for Lower Hyde Holiday Park said: “Emergency services visited the park after reports of an incident, and we are helping with their investigations.

“As those investigations are ongoing, we can’t comment further.”
