Knaus Tabbert unveils CLEANFLEX: The future of campervan toilets?

The latest breakthrough from Knaus Tabbert AG is a groundbreaking new toilet: the CLEANFLEX toilet.

This state-of-the-art system, set to be available in 2025 models, aims to revolutionize onboard sanitation with its eco-friendly, chemical-free, and waterless design.

Van Life Matters speaks to Andreas König, Head of Project and Portfolio Management at Knaus Tabbert AG, to learn more about this exciting development.

An Innovation for a Cleaner Tomorrow

“The CLEANFLEX toilet is an innovation within the caravanning sector that we will be offering in the 2025 models,” König explains.

“Unlike conventional toilet solutions, it does not need water or chemicals. It is particularly hygienic and odourless thanks to its film-based technology.

“It is extremely easy to handle, making it the perfect solution for mobile homes, caravans, and camper vans.”

The idea behind CLEANFLEX is simple yet revolutionary: a chemical-free, waterless toilet that reduces the environmental footprint while making life on the road more comfortable.

Traditional RV toilets often rely on freshwater for flushing and toxic chemicals to neutralize odours, both of which have negative environmental impacts.

CLEANFLEX changes the game by eliminating the need for these resources entirely.

Film-Based Technology: A Game Changer

One of the standout features of the CLEANFLEX toilet is its innovative film-based technology.

“There’s no need to use fresh water or toxic chemicals,” König explains. “This saves valuable water resources compared to processes with a conventional water-based toilet.”

CLEANFLEX works by sealing waste in germ-free, odourless bags, which can be safely disposed of with other residual waste.

These bags are then burned in waste incinerators, contributing to energy production and reducing CO2 emissions.

This closed-loop system not only protects the environment but also simplifies the unpleasant task of emptying a waste tank—a chore many campers dread.

“CLEANFLEX seals everything quickly, safely, and cleanly into bags,” König adds. “There is no need for a toilet brush as a completely new film is ready inside the toilet after each use. The germ-free and odourless bags are simply disposed of with residual waste.”

A New Level of Convenience for Campers

Beyond its environmental benefits, the CLEANFLEX toilet offers a major convenience upgrade for campers.

One of its key advantages is flexibility in installation, as it requires only a 12-volt power supply to recharge the battery.

“The CLEANFLEX toilet can be placed anywhere,” König points out. “This opens up new opportunities in making more flexible layouts and developing new arrangements for our baths.”

Additionally, unlike traditional cassette toilets, CLEANFLEX removes the hassle of hauling heavy waste tanks to disposal sites, a task König acknowledges as both “extremely unhygienic and unpleasant.”

The system requires minimal maintenance, with the film-based technology largely eliminating the need for regular cleaning.

Easy Installation and Self-Sufficiency

Another major plus is the ease of installation and retrofitting. CLEANFLEX doesn’t require a water connection or external ventilation, making it simple to fit into existing camper vans or caravans.

“Self-sufficiency is not a problem with CLEANFLEX as it is not powered either by the vehicle or body battery and is available at all times,” says König.

This level of independence makes it an attractive option for off-grid adventurers who value freedom and flexibility without compromising on comfort or hygiene.

Positive Feedback from Early Adopters

As with any new product, customer feedback is essential. König is proud to report that early user responses have been overwhelmingly positive.

“In particular, our customers appreciate the benefits in terms of hygiene and usage,” he says.

Campers have also praised the additional space and flexibility CLEANFLEX brings, as well as the sustainable design that reduces water consumption and eliminates the need for chemicals.

With these advantages, it’s clear that CLEANFLEX is set to become a game-changer in the world of camper van sanitation.

As the motorhome industry continues to embrace greener, more sustainable technologies, Knaus Tabbert AG’s CLEANFLEX toilet represents an exciting leap forward for campers seeking both comfort and environmental responsibility.
