Review: Good vibes only at VanLove Fest 2023

Around 560 campervans turned up at Elvington Airfield in York last weekend for the return VanLove Fest following its inaugural event last year.

The landing strip gates opened for van lifers at midday on Friday 23 June, with the now iconic VanLove ‘Vanstagram‘ shots being taken on the way in.

The love was felt across the weekend, with everyone sharing van build tips and adventure experiences over great food and drinks.

A main stage, wellness hub, marquee, activity zone, food vendors and traders centred the runway, with parked-up vans stretching far into the distance either side.

Friday’s highlights included The Great VanLove Quiz, Vanaoke, Vantazia with DJ Ade Wilcox, Rozalla and K-Klass.

Hawaii steel pans kick-started Saturday evening’s festivities as the sunset on the tarmac before Aloha Hawaii DJ Matt Monroe and Limbo got everyone moving on the main stage.

In a statement, VanLove Fest organisers Guy Robinson and Jo Fallows said: “We want to express our deepest gratitude and say a massive thank you to everyone who joined us for the ultimate celebration of van life at Elvington Airfield.

“You guys were absolutely amazing, and together we created memories that will last a lifetime.”

DID YOU KNOW: It was at Elvington Airfield in 2006 where Richard Hammond was seriously injured in his 280mph jet car crash. In the days following the crash, Top Gear fans raised almost £200,000 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, and Mr Hammond himself later presented the BBC documentary series Helicopter Heroes about the service.

Mary Catherine said: “Our first ever festival and we had the best time. Such a chilled, happy and friendly vibe.

Mark Whetton said: “New friends were made, thoroughly enjoyed the weekend.

“The convoy was an epic ending to an amazing weekend. Massive credit to the organisers, see you next year.”

Dates for VanLove Fest 2024 are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, Guy and Jo have unveiled plans for a second van life event in October: Vantober Fest.

Vantober Fest takes place on Saturday 7 October at Chelmsford Racecourse in Essex and promises a night craft beer, authentic food, and a live Bavarian band.

Vantober Fest tickets go on sale from 7 July.
