A van owner has found himself staring at an empty driveway, stripped of his cherished vehicles due to council orders.
Mike Perkins of Cranham Drive, Warndon, Worcester, now faces the dilemma of whether his vintage campervan will ever grace his driveway again.
In what he describes as a ‘David and Goliath’ tussle with Worcester City Council, Perkins remains steadfast as an appeal hearing looms on May 14.
The battle began when Perkins received a notice under section 2015 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, demanding improvements to his front garden by November 20 of the previous year.
Following council orders, the 63-year-old homeowner reluctantly bid farewell to his prized possession, a 1972 Ford Transit Landliner CI Motorhome, now parked on the street post-restoration.
Additionally, he relocated his Mini pickup and trailer to Bromsgrove, leaving his once-packed driveway bare.
Despite diligently working on his Ford Landliner to meet roadworthy standards, Perkins now faces what he deems excessive measures by the city council.
He labels their actions as ‘a sledgehammer to crack a nut,’ emphasizing his desire to exercise his right to park on his property.
“For me, it’s about reclaiming the right to park my campervan on my own driveway rather than occupying precious street space,” Perkins asserts, highlighting the inconvenience of parking on the road.
In an attempt to find common ground, Perkins had already cleared some clutter from his driveway before the initial court hearing in February.
However, he remains resolute in his stance, emphasizing the importance of retaining control over his property.
“Life involves compromise, and I hoped our efforts would suffice to prevent further legal action,” he reflects.
