Mercedes teases new electric van line-up with campervan plans

All newly developed Mercedes van models are to be built on a modular, scalable electric architecture called VAN.EA from 2026, it has been announced.

Mercedes will also expand its portfolio of camper vans “build-from-factory” with a new model line of fully electric midsize and large camper vans, based on VAN.EA.

The aim, it says, is to define the new industry standard with its international camper business partners around the world.

Mathias Geisen, head of Mercedes‑Benz Vans, said: “The premium segment positioning for commercial vans and the luxury positioning for private vans will allow us to further strengthen our focus on high margin regions, channels, products, and industries.

“The broad range of industries we serve makes our business resilient – which is a strong competitive advantage.”

The electric Mercedes vans using VAN.EA will feature a standardized front module with an electric motor powering the front wheels.

A center module can be stretched to accommodate different battery sizes and wheelbase lengths.

A rear module can be configured with or without an electric motor feeding the rear axle, depending on whether the van has front- or all-wheel drive.

While the new eSprinter will eventually be replaced by a VAN.EA version, Mercedes says that its existing vans with an internal-combustion engine will remain on sale throughout the decade.
