Councillors have voted to permanently charge for overnight campervan and motorhome parking in New Brighton and Wallasey, the Wirral Globe reports.
In July 2022, a Traffic Regulation Order was introduced for 18 months, forcing leisure vehicles to pay a £20 parking charge between 10pm and 8am daily.
Following a unanimous decision by Wirral’s Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee during a council meeting last night (Tuesday, December 5) the traffic regulation order at Kings Parade and The Dips is to be made permanent.
The £20 charge to stay overnight in the area will remain and the policy has also been extended to North Parade and Meols Parade in Hoylake.
Councillor Lesley Rennie said: “The last two years have seen a dramatic reduction in the number of campervans parking overnight in this local green space and beauty spot.
“This is thanks to the traffic order that ensured the area nearest to where people live was no longer available for such parking. The committee’s decision makes that order permanent and fully enforceable.”
The restriction originally came into force following complaints of anti-social behaviour including litter and campervan toilet cassettes being emptied on the Dips or at the beach.
It cost the council £17,000 to introduce the scheme with a £40,000 income target. Only £1,600 has been created so far.
Councillor Ian Lewis added: “While campervans can be parked overnight, for a charge it is clear from the last few months that enforcement has tailed off.
“Now that the order will be permanent, I urge the council to ensure that overnight parking only takes place in the designated areas.
“Residents have had enough of the problems caused by a minority of owners who think the rules do not apply to them.”

We motorhomers and campervanners should collectively demand that Service Points be provided in every town and tourist spot.
Local authorities should realise that fuel stations, car wash businesses and public toilet blocks can easily adapt their water and waste facilities to support Motorhome Tourism.
Problems with toilet waste dumping wouldn’t exist if there were places to responsibly empty them. Every motorway service area should have these facilities. Why haven’t they?
